Congratulations to all the students in tutor groups DCNH and DRFR

Well done to all our students in the Design and Technology college and tutor groups DCNH and DRFR for a fantastic week. We discovered lots of budding architects and hopefully helped to make people aware of the great new building that we will be moving into in September 2009.

Final exhibition of all our great work

We put on an exhibition of all the things that we have been working on this week. Hits of the show were the fantastic mosaic of our logo and the Sketchup work. We also had exhibits of our structual engineering work, our visits to the British Museum, the site of the new school and another new school designed by our architects and some great route finding artwork.

Google Sketchup a big hit

Architect David Challinor taught the members of the Design and Technology college how to use the 3D modelling software Google Sketchup. Luckily this great piece of software is a free download so click the link below to get it and start designing your own buildings.

learning to use sketch up

Today the Design & Technology college were taught how to use a program called Sketch up. The main features of Sketch up are its 3-d effects. Its a very good, but hard to use program, and today our college were just trying to get to know the program. We connected with Google earth and put our work onto the new Elmgreen site. In the afternoon we designed sculptures and outside spaces for the new school. We will put these into the new sketch up design tomorrow.

Design College Visit To The British Museum

On Tuesday 25th of March the Design and Technology College visited the British Museum. When we arrived we had lunch, after we got split into 5 groups. 3 groups had a chance to look around the museum the two remaining groups were toured around the building by two architects. The two architects are called David Chalinor and Micheal Oliff. Micheal Oliff is the main architect for our new school. The groups swapped so everyone got a chance to get toured around the building by the architects. The architects told us a great deal of information about the building and the roof. We then had to fill out a sheet of paper with questions like “Why was this building designed? , “What do you dislike and like?, and draw something you can see. Then we got on the coach back to the school.

The people we met today where the most important people on building our new school site at elm court road. Their names were, Justin Ward and Dayo Muili design coordinators. Lee Willis BSF (building schools for the future) project manager done a good presentation on our new buildings site. Dayo did most of the presentation. All three gave us a great deal of information about our new school. They gave us a sheet containing all the information on the new site, such as, where all the classrooms will be placed, they showed us the outside of the building which contained a 7-a side football pitch which could also be used for various other sports. The playground also contained a basketball court. By Rhys Cox

Design and Technology College Week - ourspace

College Week

This week all the colleges at The Elmgreen School are working together on a variety of projects. We have five colleges - Maths, Science, Communications, Humanities and Design and Technology, all made up of two tutor groups.

The outcomes of the week will be available here or on the school website (www.the-elmgreen-school.org.uk) next week.

Welcome to The Elmgreen School

The Elmgreen School is a unique 11-18 secondary school. It is a non denominational mixed school which opened to its first cohort of year 7 students in September 2007. The school is non selective and provides a creative and innovative curriculum, encouraging the highest standards of teaching and learning within an ethos of mutual respect, harmony and achievement.

As the first Parent Promoted school in the UK, The Elmgreen School pays special attention to working closely with families and the local community, ensuring every student benefits from a challenging and inspirational curriculum and is cared for and developed within a secure and supportive environment.

By 2013 the school, which is a specialist humanities college, will have 900 students of age 11-16 and will have a 200 place sixth form.

The school is based on a fully refurbished interim site for two years and will move in summer 2009 to its brand new buildings on its permanent Elm Court Road site.
